چکیده

We present a study of the e®ects of active queue management (AQM) on the average queue size in routers. In this work, three prominent AQM schemes are considered: packet classi ̄cation, checking service level agreements (SLA) and queue scheduling. This paper presents several adaptive resource sharing models that use a revenue criterion to allocate bandwidth in an optimal way. The models ensure QoS requirements of data °ows and, at the same time, maximize the total revenue by adjusting parameters of the underlying schedulers. De ̄cit round robin (DRR) and de ̄cit weighted round robin (DWRR) scheduling techniques have shown their ability in providing fair and weighted sharing of network resources for network devices. However, they are unable to use the total allocated network bandwidth even in burst tra±c. In this paper, we propose a negative-de ̄cit weighted round robin (N-DWRR) technique as a new packet scheduling discipline to improve the bandwidth utilization rate without increasing the total latency. A fully hardware packet scheduler has been implemented and veri ̄ed as part of an intellectual property core. This is motivated by the fact that the design and analysis of hardware/software architectures for such techniques requires new models and methods, which do not fall under the domain of traditional embedded-systems design.

A Connectionless Approach to Providing QoS in IP Networks

The attempt to provide QoS in IP networks has raised some interesting questions on how a service can be provided to meet the application requirements while obeying the network resource constraints. Previous efforts focussed on a flow-based, connection oriented approach to deliver QoS for IP Networks Intserv. This approach was quite comprehensive but it has not been widely deployed because of co...

Performance of TCP/IP with MEDF Scheduling

To achieve Quality of Service (QoS) in Next Generation Networks (NGNs), the Differentiated Services architecture implements appropriate Per Hop Behavior (PHB) for service differentiation. Common recommendations to enforce appropriate PHB include Weighted Round Robin (WRR), Deficit RoundRobin (DRR) and similar algorithms. They assign a fixed bandwidth share to Transport Service Classes (TSCs) of...

A simple and effective scheduling mechanism using minimized cycle round robin

packet and cell switched networks. We demonstrate that MCRR exhibits optimal worst-case latency property in a certain class of weighted round robin (WRR) approaches which are currently used for packet (cell) scheduling in high-speed networks, such as ATM networks. We further present a Hierarchical MCRR (HMCRR) mechanism to maximize the efficacy of MCRR in practice and be scalable to large numbe...

Comparison of distributed fair QoS mechanisms in wireless LANs

It is well known that the distributed coordination function (DCF) of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is not suitable for supporting multimedia and QoS-sensitive applications because of its inherent lack of QoS support and fairness. Recently, several distributed QoS mechanisms have been proposed which translate user QoS requirements into typically a single parameter of the DCF protocol. In this pap...
